A brief History
Abhainn Dearg, Islands Region, Scotland. Founded in 2008
A Wild Spirit from the Western Edge
Set on the rugged coast of the Isle of Lewis, Abhainn Dearg Distillery isn’t just remote – it’s rebellious. Meaning “Red River” in Gaelic, Abhainn Dearg is Scotland’s most westerly distillery, and probably its most hands-on. This isn’t mass-produced, crowd-pleasing whisky. This is bold, unpolished, Hebridean character in liquid form.
Founded in 2008 by Mark Tayburn, a former salmon fisherman turned whisky pioneer, Abhainn Dearg brought distilling back to the Outer Hebrides for the first time in nearly 200 years. Built on a former fish hatchery, it’s about as “craft” as it gets. Locally grown barley, spring water from nearby hills, and stills that look like they were drawn up by a whisky-loving blacksmith – it’s raw, real, and unforgettable.
Flavour Profile: Wild Island Whisky
You don’t come to Abhainn Dearg for refined elegance. You come for the wild, grainy, salty goodness that only a windswept island can offer.
