A brief History

Allt‑a‑Bhainne, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1975

Speyside’s Modernist Enigma

Think of Allt‑a‑Bhainne as the Speyside oddball—sleek, modern, and quietly efficient. Built in 1975 for Seagram’s as a malt powerhouse to fuel Chivas Regal and other blends, it defied tradition with its one-room, single-operator layout. Set at the foot of Ben Rinnes near Dufftown, it silently hums along, producing gentle, fruity spirits and—even occasionally—a lightly peated drop that adds an unexpected twist. It’s rarely bottled as a single malt, yet when it appears, the few independent releases become whisky fan treasures. It's the behind-the-scenes star you didn’t know you needed.

Flavour Profile:

Peaty / Smoky

Fruity

Sweet

Allt‑a‑Bhainne is known for its light, fresh, and graceful Speyside style. Though mostly unpeated, around a third of production carries a whisper of peat (roughly 15‑20ppm), adding a smoked edge to honey, orchard fruit, and gentle malty notes. Key characteristics include:

  • Green apple, pear, and soft citrus

  • Sweet honeyed warmth and biscuit malt

  • A balance of floral sweetness and occasional gentle smoke
