A brief History
Amrut, India. Founded in 1948.
Amrut is one of the distilleries credited with putting Indian whisky on the world stage. Long before whisky enthusiasts were talking about Indian single malts, Amrut was quietly producing spirits in Bengaluru and building expertise that would eventually earn international recognition.
The company was founded in 1948 by J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale, shortly after India gained independence. For decades, Amrut focused primarily on the domestic market. Everything changed in 2004 when the distillery launched its first single malt whisky internationally.
Many whisky drinkers were sceptical at first. Indian single malt was largely unknown outside the country. That changed quickly. Critics and enthusiasts were surprised by the quality, complexity and maturity of Amrut's whiskies, helping establish India as a serious whisky-producing nation.
Today, Amrut is regarded as one of the pioneers of Indian single malt whisky and continues to produce award-winning whiskies enjoyed around the world.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Amrut Distillery is located in the city of Bangalore, Karnataka, India, and is widely regarded as the pioneer of Indian single malt whisky on the global stage. Founded in 1948 by J.N. Radhakrishna Rao Jagdale, the company initially focused on producing Indian-made spirits before launching its first single malt whisky in 2004.
The name "Amrut" comes from the Sanskrit word for "nectar of the gods", reflecting the distillery's ambition to create premium whisky capable of competing with established Scotch producers.
Amrut played a major role in establishing India's reputation as a producer of world-class single malt whisky and remains one of the country's most respected whisky brands.
Production
- Spirit Type: Indian single malt whisky
- Stills: Traditional copper pot stills
- Climate: Tropical Bangalore climate with high maturation rates
- Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon casks, with sherry, port, rum, and specialty cask finishes
- Water Source: Local water sources filtered through the Bangalore region
The warm Indian climate accelerates maturation, allowing Amrut whiskies to develop significant flavour intensity in fewer years than many Scotch whiskies.
Whisky Style
Amrut whisky typically shows:
- Rich tropical fruit notes
- Vanilla and honey sweetness
- Oak spice and cinnamon
- Dark chocolate and coffee characteristics
- Full-bodied, oily texture
The combination of Indian barley, tropical maturation, and active oak creates bold, flavour-packed whiskies with impressive depth and complexity.
