A brief History
Ardbeg, Islay Region, Scotland. Founded in 1815
Smoke, Salt, and a Touch of Chaos
If Islay whiskies were a family, Ardbeg would be the rebellious punk — loud, wild, and unapologetically smoky. It’s the one that doesn’t just whisper peat; it shouts it through a megaphone, sets it on fire, and offers you a dram with a cheeky grin.
Founded in 1815, Ardbeg has lived many lives. It boomed in the 1800s, stumbled through the 20th century, and was nearly lost in the '90s before being rescued and relaunched with cult-like fanfare. Today, it's owned by LVMH, but it still feels raw, wild, and wonderfully weird.
Set right on the southern shore of Islay, Ardbeg is surrounded by sea spray, rolling mist, and just the right amount of mystery. And the whisky? Smoky, salty, and powerful — but somehow still balanced.

Peaty / Smoky |
Rich / Chocolatey | Briny / Maritime |
Yes, Ardbeg is peaty. But it’s not just smoke for smoke’s sake. There’s sweetness in there too. Zingy citrus, roasted malt, and a whiff of sea air — like a bonfire on the beach after a whisky-fuelled night.
Ardbeg is known for its heavily peated, full-flavoured single malts with a distinctly coastal edge. Key flavour characteristics include:
-
Bonfire smoke and smoked meat
-
Sea spray, iodine, and salty tang
-
Roasted coffee, cocoa, and liquorice
-
Zesty lemon, burnt sugar, and black pepper
