A brief History

Aultmore, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1896.

Hidden in the foggy folds of Speyside, Aultmore is a name that whisky lovers often whisper about—but don’t always shout. That’s kind of the point. Founded back in 1896 by Alexander Edward, this distillery has spent most of its life producing whisky for blends. You’ve probably tasted Aultmore without even realising it—especially if you’ve had a glass of Dewar’s.

While it’s been under the radar for much of its life, the past few years have seen a rise in official bottlings, and that’s been exciting for whisky drinkers who want to see what Speyside can do when it’s not just supporting the big names.

The name "Aultmore" comes from the Gaelic for “big burn,” a nod to the burn that supplies the distillery’s water—foggy, mossy, and very much in keeping with the mystique that surrounds this place. It’s not flashy. It’s not trying to be trendy. But once you’ve had a sip of Aultmore, you’ll understand why it’s quietly gathered such a devoted following.

Flavour Profile:

Oaky / Woody

Fruity
Malty / Cereal

Aultmore is renowned for its clean, crisp, and fruity single malts. There’s a softness to it that lets the orchard fruits—like apple and pear—shine. Behind that, you’ll find notes of honey, vanilla, and just the right touch of oak spice. It’s not the sort of whisky that hits you over the head. Instead, it builds slowly, revealing more the longer you sit with it.

Some expressions lean into the cereal grain profile, while others explore dried fruit and woodier territory, especially in longer-aged or cask-finished releases. Either way, Aultmore consistently delivers balance and quiet sophistication.

Visitor Centre Info

At present, Aultmore does not operate a public visitor centre. The distillery focuses on production rather than tourism. However, on occasion—such as during the Spirit of Speyside Festival—Aultmore may host private tours or tastings. These are limited and typically by appointment only.

If you're exploring distilleries in the area, it’s worth keeping your eye on festival listings or checking in with the local whisky scene to see if any rare opportunities arise.
