A brief History

Bains, South Africa. Founded in 2009

South Africa’s Grain Pioneer

When most people think whisky, their minds go straight to Scotland or Ireland. But Bain’s Cape Mountain Whisky proves that world-class whisky can come from the southern hemisphere too. Introduced in 2009, Bain’s is South Africa’s first single grain whisky, produced at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, Western Cape.

Named after Andrew Geddes Bain, a Scottish-born road engineer who built the famous Bain’s Kloof Pass, the whisky celebrates connection between Scotland’s whisky heritage and South Africa’s rugged landscape. Crafted from 100% South African yellow maize (corn), Bain’s takes advantage of the region’s warm climate to accelerate maturation, giving the whisky a distinctive smoothness and layered sweetness.

Over the years, Bain’s has gained international recognition, including awards for best grain whisky. It has helped put South Africa firmly on the global whisky map, offering something fresh, approachable, and proudly different.
