A brief History

Ballantine's, Scotland. Founded in 1827

Few names in Scotch whisky carry the same global recognition as Ballantine’s. Founded in 1827 by George Ballantine in Edinburgh, the brand has grown from a small grocer’s store selling whisky, tea, and cigars into one of the world’s biggest blended Scotch whiskies. By the early 20th century, Ballantine’s had cemented its place as a serious blender, praised for balance, smoothness, and quality.

Today, Ballantine’s is produced under the ownership of Pernod Ricard, and it’s consistently among the top three best-selling Scotch whisky brands worldwide. The hallmark of Ballantine’s is its versatility—it’s smooth enough for mixing, layered enough for sipping, and wide-ranging in its portfolio to suit every occasion, from entry-level blends to luxury aged expressions.

Distillery Facts

Origins & Brand

  • Founded by George Ballantine in 1827 in Edinburgh as a grocery and spirits shop.

  • Evolved into whisky blending and spirit trade, with the brand taking shape in the mid-19th century.

  • Received a Royal Warrant in 1895, affirming its reputation and quality.

Ownership & Scale

Blend Composition & Style

  • Blend consists of about 50 single malts and 4 grain whiskies.

  • Two “fingerprint” malts—Miltonduff and Glenburgie—form the core character of the blend.

  • Sources from multiple whisky regions: Speyside, Highlands, Islay, and Lowlands.

  • Flavour style tends toward smooth, balanced, soft and sweet notes (vanilla, milk chocolate, red apple) with subtle complexity.

Product Range

  • Ballantine’s Finest: flagship no-age-statement blend, most widely known expression.

  • Ballantine’s 12 Year Old: a core age-statement expression.

  • Ballantine’s 17 Year Old: aged blend known for maturity, oakable sweetness and harmony.

  • Ballantine’s 21 Year Old, 30 Year Old, and even 40 Year Old are premium expressions in the range.

  • More recently, Ballantine’s announced a Single Malt Series: three distinct 15-year single malts from the signature distilleries (Glenburgie, Miltonduff, Glentauchers).

Historical & Operational Notes

  • In 1937, Ballantine’s acquired Miltonduff and Glenburgie distilleries to secure malt whisky supply.

  • It also built a large grain distillery in Dumbarton to support its blending operations.

  • The brand’s iconic square bottle design was reportedly developed to prevent bottles rolling or rattling when carried—useful for brand ambassadors traveling with whisky samples.

  • The company was awarded a Grant of Heraldic Arms in 1938; that crest appears on every bottle, representing barley, water, pot stills, and casks.
