A brief History

Bladnoch, Lowland Region, Scotland. Founded in 1817

Scotland’s Southern Outpost with a Soul

Bladnoch is not just another whisky distillery—it’s Scotland’s southernmost single malt producer and a living bridge between Lowland tradition and modern ambition. Situated near Wigtown in Dumfries & Galloway, it’s one of only a handful of Lowland distilleries still operating. Founded in 1817 by the McClelland brothers, Bladnoch has had a storied life: periods of success, hardship, closure, and revival. In 2015, Australian entrepreneur David Prior acquired the distillery and ushered in a renaissance. Since resuming full production in 2017, Bladnoch has leaned into both heritage and innovation, producing single malts that reflect its river, climate, and cask philosophies.

Although much of its output previously fed blending houses, today Bladnoch pushes its single malt range—expressions like Samsara, Adela (15‑year), Talia (25‑year)—to showcase what Lowland Scotch can be when treated with attention and care. If you enjoy whisky that balances lightness and depth, that nods to Lowland florals yet carries weight, Bladnoch is a name to watch.

Flavour Profile:

Fruity

Sweet

Oaky / Woody

Bladnoch’s spirit is typically light, fragrant, and fruity, with the soft elegance expected from a Lowland malt. But those aromas lie over a framework that can carry bold sherry or oak cask character. In many expressions, you’ll find orchard fruits, gentle honey and vanilla notes, and soft wood spice. Some batches also lean darker—rich dried fruit, chocolate touches, and a graceful fullness that surprises given the distillery’s often delicate profile.

Visitor Centre & Tours

Yes — Bladnoch is open to visitors, and its Visitor Centre and Café Melba opened in 2019. Tours are offered Tuesday through Saturday, with classic tours starting at 11 am, 1 pm, and 3 pm. The café typically operates from 10 am to 4 pm. You can walk through their working distillery, warehouse, and taste select expressions. Because of its relatively small operation, the tours feel personal rather than industrial.
