Highland Whisky with Roots & Reach

Blair Athol sits just south of Pitlochry in Perthshire, serving as a gateway to the Highlands. Its origins go back to 1798, when it was first founded under the name “Aldour,” after the nearby Allt Dour burn which supplies its water. Over time, the distillery was rebuilt, renamed, mothballed, and revived multiple times. Today it is owned by Diageo and is best known both for its limited single malt bottlings and as the main malt component in Bell’s Blended Scotch Whisky.

Blair Athol isn’t the loudest name in whisky, but that’s part of its appeal. It blends subtle fruit, soft nutty tones, and malt sweetness in a spirit that is elegant yet durable. Because most of its production goes into blends, its single malt releases are relatively rare and prized by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

  • Opening times:
      • April to September: open daily, 10:00am – 18:00
      • October to March: usually 10:00am – 17:00
      • (Last tour typically runs around one hour before closing)

      • Signature Tour – Basic guided walk through production with tasting of several drams
      • Allt Dour Tour – More immersive, with tasting from casks, historic insight, and premium drams
      • Other Premium Experiences – Larger tastings, special whiskies, or masterclasses

  • Visitor Facilities: Includes a shop, tasting bar (often located in a converted mash tun), and cafes. Some tour routes include warehouse viewing areas, though parts of the distillery are restricted due to steps or layout.

Ownership & History—A Condensed Story

  • 1798: Distillery founded by John Stewart and Robert Robertson under the name Aldour

  • Early 1800s: Operated sporadically; in 1825 it was expanded and the name changed to Blair Athol

  • 1882: Bought by Peter Mackenzie, who modernised it

  • 1932: Closed during economic hardship

  • 1933: Acquired by Arthur Bell & Sons, but remained silent until 1949

  • 1973: Stills increased from two to four to boost output

  • 1985 onward: Bell’s was acquired by larger groups, eventually merging into what became Diageo

  • Today: Blair Athol functions under Diageo, and continues to balance its role in blends with occasional single malt releases
