A brief History
Braunstein, Denmark. Founded in 2005.
Braunstein is one of the pioneers of modern Danish whisky. Long before Danish whisky became a recognised category, brothers Claus and Michael Braunstein were already experimenting with the idea of producing high-quality whisky in Denmark.
Located in the historic harbour town of Køge, just south of Copenhagen, Braunstein began life as a brewery in 2005 before expanding into whisky production in 2007. Unlike many large-scale distilleries, Braunstein remains proudly independent, producing whisky in relatively small batches with a strong focus on craftsmanship and quality.
What makes Braunstein particularly interesting is its willingness to experiment. The distillery produces both peated and unpeated whiskies, uses a variety of cask types, and regularly releases limited editions alongside its core range. The result is a portfolio that feels distinctly Scandinavian while still respecting traditional whisky-making techniques.
I often think of Braunstein as one of the distilleries that helped put Danish whisky on the map. It may not have centuries of history behind it, but it has built a reputation through quality rather than age.

Braunstein is renowned for producing rich, flavourful whiskies that balance sweetness with spice. Many expressions offer notes of vanilla, caramel, honey, orchard fruits and warming oak. Depending on the release, you may also find gentle smoke, dried fruit or citrus notes.
The overall style tends to be approachable but full of character, offering something a little different from both Scotch and Irish whiskey.
If I had to sum it up in a few words: craft-driven, flavourful, and distinctly Danish.
