A brief History

Bruichladdich, Islay Region, Scotland. Founded in 1881

The Progressive Hebridean Distillers

If most Islay distilleries are all about tradition, Bruichladdich is the one that scribbled all over the rulebook in bright green highlighter. Set right on the shores of Loch Indaal, this Islay distillery is less about following the old playbook and more about asking, "Why not?"

Founded in 1881, closed a few times (like many others), and finally resurrected in 2001 by a group of whisky lovers with wild ideas and a love for terroir — Bruichladdich has since become one of the most talked-about names in modern whisky. They're big on barley origin, transparency, community, and doing things their own way. Even the bottle design looks like it belongs in a Bauhaus gallery, not a dusty pub shelf.

And the whisky? Oh, it’s bold. Whether you’re sipping an unpeated Bruichladdich, a heavily peated Port Charlotte, or the fire-breathing beast that is Octomore, you’re in for something memorable.

Flavour Profile: Clean, Coastal, or Totally Explosive

Here’s the deal: Bruichladdich makes three kinds of whisky — all under the same roof:

  • Bruichladdich (unpeated): Clean, floral, salty and subtle

  • Port Charlotte (heavily peated): Smoky, complex, but still refined

  • Octomore (super heavily peated): Ridiculously smoky, but surprisingly elegant

Peaty / Smoky

Fruity Briny / Maritime

Bruichladdich is famous for flavour-packed single malts that explore everything from barley variety to fermentation time. Key flavour characteristics include:

  • Salty sea spray and toasted cereal

  • Green apples, pear drops, and lemon zest

  • Bonfire smoke (Port Charlotte), or full-on smoke grenade (Octomore)

  • Biscuit malt, rich peat, and long, savoury finishes
