Caperdonich Distillery: Speyside’s Lost Malt with a Cult Following
Caperdonich is one of those distilleries that serious whisky drinkers speak about with a certain tone. It’s not operating anymore. You can’t visit it. The buildings themselves were demolished in 2011. And yet, its whisky lives on — and in some cases, it’s better now than it ever was.
Founded in 1898 in Rothes, Speyside, Caperdonich was built during one of Scotland’s whisky booms. It closed, reopened, changed hands, and quietly produced malt for blends for most of its life. It was rarely marketed as a single malt in its early years. That’s part of what makes it interesting today.
The distillery had two distinct styles over its lifetime. Most production was classic Speyside — light, fruity, and clean. But during certain periods in the 1960s and 1970s, Caperdonich also produced a peated style. That twist adds another layer to its story.
Today, older stock — often 20 to 40 years old — appears in special releases and independent bottlings. And that’s where Caperdonich has earned its reputation.

Caperdonich’s character depends heavily on era and cask, but the unpeated style is known for being elegant and fruit-led.
Older unpeated Caperdonich often shows soft orchard fruit, honeyed sweetness, and gentle oak polish.

Distillery Facts
-
Distillery: Cameronbridge Distillery
-
Type: Grain whisky distillery (Scotch whisky)
-
Region: Scotland (Fife)
-
Status: One of the largest and longest-running grain whisky producers in Scotland
Role in Whisky Production
-
Cameronbridge is a grain whisky distillery, not a single malt distillery.
-
Grain whisky from sites like Cameronbridge is a key component in blended Scotch whiskies.
-
Grain whisky is lighter, smoother, and less intensely flavoured than malt whisky, which helps balance blends.
Ownership
-
The distillery is part of a major Scotch whisky portfolio and supplies grain whisky for multiple blended whisky brands.
Production Style
-
Uses continuous column stills (also known as Coffey stills) rather than traditional pot stills.
-
Produces a high-volume, consistent spirit for blending.
-
Mash bills typically include corn or wheat with malted barley for enzymatic conversion.
-
Spirit is clean, light, and mellow compared with pot-still malt.
Maturation
-
Aged in oak barrels (primarily ex-bourbon and other refill casks).
-
The climate in Scotland provides relatively moderate ageing conditions compared with warmer regions.
Spirit Characteristics (Grain Whisky)
-
Light cereal sweetness
-
Creamy, smooth texture
-
Subtle vanilla and gentle oak
-
Minimal peat or heavy spice
Importance
-
Cameronbridge is one of the major backbone producers in the Scotch industry because most blended Scotches rely heavily on grain whisky.
-
Without large grain distilleries like this, blended Scotch as a category would not be viable at scale.
