A brief History
Cardhu, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1824
The Quiet Heart of Speyside
Nestled among the rolling hills of Speyside, Cardhu Distillery is one of those under-the-radar gems that quietly powers some of Scotland’s best-loved whiskies. Known for its light, honeyed style and long-standing role in the Johnnie Walker blends, Cardhu has been making whisky since 1824, with a story as rich as its flavour.
It was originally founded by John Cumming — though, it’s fair to say his wife, Helen Cumming, is the true legend of the story. She famously ran the still while watching for excise officers from the kitchen window, and later helped shape the distillery into one of the first truly woman-led operations in Scotland’s whisky scene. Talk about ahead of her time.
Today, Cardhu is still going strong under Diageo’s stewardship. It’s one of the most approachable Speyside single malts out there — soft, easy-drinking, and a brilliant gateway for folks just getting into Scotch.
