A brief History
The Silent Giant of Scottish Grain Whisky
If you’re into rare finds and distilleries that no longer exist, Carsebridge is a name that pops up in whispers among collectors. Tucked away in Alloa in Scotland’s Lowlands, Carsebridge was once the largest grain whisky distillery in Scotland. It started life back in 1799, originally producing malt whisky. But by the 1850s, it had shifted focus and went all-in on grain, becoming a key supplier for blended Scotch whiskies.
Carsebridge wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t trying to win hearts with bold branding or single malt showpieces. Instead, it focused on producing top-quality grain whisky at serious scale, much of which went into blends owned by the Distillers Company Ltd (DCL), a forerunner of Diageo.
Sadly, the distillery shut its doors in 1983, and the site was later demolished in the 1990s. Today, the name lives on through independent bottlings — usually older expressions, often aged 30+ years — and these are absolute treasures for whisky fans looking for something unique, smooth, and full of heritage.
