Edinburgh's Micro Malt Experiment

Nestled in Granton, north Edinburgh, the Chain Pier Distillery stands for whisky curiosity and innovation. Established in 2018 as a pilot site by Halewood Artisanal Spirits (the team behind the John Crabbie & Co brand), the distillery was created while their larger Bonnington project was still under construction.
What makes it intriguing for whisky lovers in the UK is how short‑lived it was — production began in December 2018, filled only 39 casks by 2019, and was never intended for mass output. Because of that, Chain Pier releases are rare and carry a bit of “first‑steps in Edinburgh whisky” appeal. Think of it as a whisper in the Lowlands rather than the roar of a full‑scale distillery.

Chain Pier is known for its clean‑cut, small‑batch single malt style. The cereal backbone still shows through (that Lowland touch), giving the whisky a crisp, malty‑grain texture alongside the wood influence. Short‑aged as it is, it feels light and lively rather than heavy or deeply matured.

  • Caol Ila was founded in 1846 by Hector Henderson on the northeast coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland.
