A brief History
Clarendon, Jamaica. Founded in 1942.
Proper Jamaican Rum, No Shortcuts
If you’ve spent any time around rum, you’ll know Jamaica does things differently. Bigger flavour, more character, and not much interest in playing it safe. Clarendon Distillery sits right in the middle of that.
Based in May Pen, Clarendon has been producing rum since the 18th century. It’s one of those working distilleries that focuses on production rather than presentation. No gimmicks, just serious rum-making.
What makes it interesting is how often you’ve probably tasted it without realising. Clarendon supplies rum to a range of brands and independent bottlers. It’s also closely tied to Monymusk, which is its main in-house label.
The style? Classic Jamaican. Bold, fruity, slightly wild at times. Not always the easiest introduction, but once you get used to it, it’s hard to go back to lighter rums.

| Fruity | Spicy | Rich / Chocolatey |
Clarendon rums are known for their rich, fruity, and slightly funky profile, often with more depth than lighter Caribbean styles.
Clarendon is known for producing full-bodied Jamaican rums with real character. You’ll often find:
- Deep ripe fruit notes, sometimes edging into overripe or fermented fruit
- A core of caramel and molasses richness
- A finish with oak, spice, and a slightly earthy edge
Some expressions lean cleaner, others go heavier and more “funky” — that classic Jamaican style people talk about. Either way, it’s not a subtle rum.

Popular Bottlings & Core Expressions
Clarendon distillery rum often appears under different labels. Key releases include:
- Monymusk Classic Gold Rum
A more accessible introduction. Light fruit, gentle spice, easy mixing. - Monymusk Plantation Overproof Rum
Stronger, more intense. Big flavour, not for casual sipping. - Clarendon Single Cask (Independent Bottlings)
Released by independent bottlers. These can be complex, high-strength, and vary a lot in flavour. - Monymusk Aged Expressions (various years)
More time in cask brings deeper fruit, spice, and oak influence.

- Pot stills (for heavier, flavour-rich styles)
- Column stills (for lighter, cleaner spirit)

- Appleton Estate
- Hampden Estate
Associated Brands
- Most closely linked to Monymusk Rum, which originates from the same estate.
- Also supplies rum for:
- Independent bottlers
- Blends across global markets
Style & Profile
Typical Clarendon rum characteristics:

Compared to Hampden (very high ester), Clarendon is often:
- More balanced
- Slightly less intense but still distinctly Jamaican
Industry Position
- Important production distillery rather than a consumer-facing luxury brand.
- Plays a key role in:
- Global rum supply chains
- Blended rum composition
Important Clarification
