Tucked away in the heart of Speyside’s whisky country, Convalmore Distillery is one of those quiet legends that never chased the spotlight but still managed to capture the hearts of collectors and whisky lovers. Founded in 1893 and beginning production a year later, Convalmore played a steady role supplying malt for blends during the whisky boom era. While it never became a big-name single malt in its lifetime, it certainly didn’t go unnoticed by those who value quality over fame.

The distillery closed its doors in 1985, its copper stills long gone, but the name still echoes through the whisky world. Rare Convalmore bottlings have become prized treasures – often full of Speyside character with a touch of old-world charm. These are whiskies that feel like time capsules – elegant, refined, and just a little bit elusive.

Visitor Centre

There is no visitor centre at Convalmore. The distillery ceased production in 1985, and the original stills were removed. Today, the site is used for whisky storage. It’s not open to the public.

Current Status:

  • Owned by a major spirits company and used for warehousing only.

Historical Ownership Timeline:

  • 1893: Founded by Convalmore-Glenlivet Distillery Co.

  • 1904: Sold to W.P. Lowrie & Co.

  • 1906: Taken over by James Buchanan & Co.

  • 1925: Absorbed by Distillers Company Ltd (DCL)

  • 1985: Mothballed and never re-opened

The distillery experienced a major fire in 1909, after which a short-lived experiment with a continuous still was abandoned. Traditional pot stills remained the heart of its production until closure.
