A brief History
Convalmore, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1893
Conalmore: Dufftown's Hidden Malt Treasure
Tucked away in the heart of Speyside’s whisky country, Convalmore Distillery is one of those quiet legends that never chased the spotlight but still managed to capture the hearts of collectors and whisky lovers. Founded in 1893 and beginning production a year later, Convalmore played a steady role supplying malt for blends during the whisky boom era. While it never became a big-name single malt in its lifetime, it certainly didn’t go unnoticed by those who value quality over fame.
The distillery closed its doors in 1985, its copper stills long gone, but the name still echoes through the whisky world. Rare Convalmore bottlings have become prized treasures – often full of Speyside character with a touch of old-world charm. These are whiskies that feel like time capsules – elegant, refined, and just a little bit elusive.

Convalmore Distillery was founded in 1893 in Dufftown, Speyside.
-
Built during the late-19th-century whisky boom to supply malt for blends.
-
Suffered a major fire in 1909, after which the distillery was rebuilt and expanded.
-
Operated for most of its life as a blending distillery, not widely bottled as a single malt.
-
Closed in 1985 during the widespread distillery rationalisation of the era.
-
The site and warehouses are now owned by William Grant & Sons (owners of Glenfiddich).
Production & Style
-
Known for producing a classic Speyside malt, typically light, fruity, and gentle.
-
Used triple distillation for a short period early in its history (rare in Scotland, more typical of Irish whisky).
-
Later returned to standard double distillation with pot stills.
-
Mash and wash production was designed for consistency to support blending rather than showcasing distinctive single malt character.
Flavour Profile (Typical)
-
Nose: Soft fruit (apple, pear), honey, floral notes.
-
Palate: Sweet malt, vanilla, light oak, occasional subtle spice.
-
Finish: Clean, smooth, and delicate with gentle sweetness.
Older long-aged expressions can show deeper notes: dried fruit, beeswax, polished oak, and richer complexity due to long maturation.
Bottlings & Rarity
-
No core range was released while the distillery was active.
-
Most available bottles today are rare independent bottlings or limited official releases from closed-distillery series.
-
Older Convalmore releases (e.g., 25–35 year) are highly collectible and can be expensive due to scarcity.
Significance
-
Considered a “lost distillery” of Speyside, remembered for its elegant style and blending heritage.
-
Its surviving bottles offer a glimpse into Speyside whisky character from the late 20th century.
-
Holds historical value as part of Dufftown’s rich whisky landscape, alongside its neighbours Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Mortlach.
