A brief History
Craigellachie, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1891.
Craigellachie: Speyside's Bold and Brawny Malt
Craigellachie isn’t your typical Speyside whisky. Built in 1891 by Alexander Edward and Peter Mackie, it was always meant to stand out — and it still does. Sitting on a rocky hill above the village of Craigellachie (the name literally means “rocky hill” in Gaelic), this distillery was designed with character in mind. Edward was just 26 when he helped build the place, but he already had experience with distilleries like Benrinnes and later founded others including Aultmore and Benromach.
The style here is robust and gutsy — a far cry from the light, floral whiskies many expect from the region. And that’s on purpose. Craigellachie uses old-school worm tub condensers, which produce a heavier, meatier spirit with real weight to it.
For years, Craigellachie was a hidden gem, mainly used in blends. But since 2014, it’s stepped into the limelight with its own range of single malts — and they’ve turned a lot of heads. If you’re looking for a Speyside dram with a bit more bite, this one’s worth a sip.
