A brief History

Dartmoor, England. Founded in 2017.

Dartmoor: From Granite Moor to English Single Malt

Dartmoor Whisky Distillery might be one of the most exciting things to come out of Devon in years — apart from cream teas and damp hiking boots. Tucked inside a beautifully restored Victorian town hall in Bovey Tracey, this small-batch distillery is proving that world-class whisky can absolutely come from the wilds of south-west England.

Launched in 2017, Dartmoor was born from a love of single malt and a belief that whisky should be rooted in its surroundings. And that’s what you get here — whisky shaped by local barley, moorland spring water, and a unique Cognac still repurposed for the job. It’s a blend of old-world charm and modern English spirit, both literally and figuratively.

Unlike the more ancient Scottish names, Dartmoor is a bit of a fresh start. There’s no dusty legacy to uphold — just a strong focus on quality, locality, and expression. Each release is small, often single cask, and genuinely connected to place. If you want to taste English whisky that has personality and purpose, this is where you start.

Flavour Profile:

Oaky / Woody

Fruity
Malty / Cereal

Dartmoor’s whisky has a clean, gentle character that leans towards malt sweetness and orchard fruit. Depending on the cask type, you’ll often find notes of vanilla, soft toffee, fresh apple, or even a dash of oak spice to round it out. The house style is approachable but layered — think of it as Sunday afternoon whisky: easy to sip, never boring, and always better with good company.

  • Ex-Bordeaux Red Wine Cask – Slightly richer, with red berries and a dry finish.

  • Ex-Oloroso Sherry Cask – Warm, rounded and more robust with dried fruit and nutty spice.

  • Single Cask / Limited Editions – Released occasionally and snapped up fast; often the best way to taste something truly unique.

Ownership & History

Dartmoor Whisky was founded by a group of passionate whisky lovers who wanted to bring craft single malt production to Devon. It officially began distilling in 2017, making it one of the newer players in English whisky — and the very first in the county.

The distillery is independently owned and operated, with a small team overseeing the entire process from grain to glass. There’s no big corporate parent, just a lot of love and hands-on effort. That local, grounded approach shines through in every bottle.
