A brief History
Dewar's, Scotland. Founded in 1846
Dewar’s is one of those whisky names you’ve probably seen on a backbar or supermarket shelf — but behind that familiar label lies a surprisingly rich story. The company kicked off in 1846 when John Dewar opened a wine and spirits shop in Perth, Scotland. It wasn’t long before the Dewar name became associated with quality blended Scotch whisky.
What made Dewar’s stand out was their eye for innovation and marketing. John’s sons, especially Tommy Dewar, were instrumental in spreading the whisky across the globe. Tommy, in particular, became somewhat of a celebrity — not just for whisky, but for being one of the great travelling showmen of the Victorian era. The Dewar’s name travelled with him — from London to New York, and far beyond.
To make sure they had a steady, quality supply of malt for their blends, the Dewars built their own distillery at Aberfeldy in 1898 — a Highland gem that still produces the heart of Dewar’s blends today.
Today, Dewar’s remains one of the world’s most recognisable Scotch whisky brands — approachable, affordable, and widely enjoyed.

Dewar’s is known for smooth, well-balanced whiskies that deliver a touch of sweetness, soft malt, and a mellow mouthfeel. Their blends often start with honeyed vanilla and soft fruit before opening up into gentle spice and oak. Nothing too bold, nothing too shy — it’s crowd-pleasing Scotch that performs well neat, on ice, or in a highball.
