A brief History
Dailuaine, Speysides Region, Scotland. Founded in 1852.
Dailuaine is one of Speyside’s quiet heavyweights. Founded in 1852 near Carron, just south of Aberlour, it doesn’t enjoy the spotlight of Glenfiddich or Macallan — but it produces a substantial volume of malt whisky each year. Most of it disappears into blends, particularly Johnnie Walker.
That tells you something straight away. Dailuaine makes robust, characterful spirit. Blenders use it for body and depth rather than delicacy.
Historically, Dailuaine was also important for practical reasons. In 1889 it became one of the first distilleries in Scotland to install a pagoda roof ventilator — a design that later became iconic across the industry. It also operated its own on-site maltings for many years.
When you taste Dailuaine as a single malt — often through independent bottlings or the Flora & Fauna range — you quickly realise it’s not light and airy Speyside. It’s richer, meatier, and slightly old-school in style.

Rich / Chocolately |
Oaky / Woody | Fruity |
Dailuaine has a fuller-bodied style than many Speyside neighbours. You’ll often find dense malt character at its core, layered with dried fruit and dark chocolate notes, particularly when matured in sherry-seasoned casks.
There’s sometimes a slightly savoury edge — almost meaty or nutty — which gives it structure. Oak spice and cocoa tend to build on the finish.
It’s not delicate. It’s solid and textured. A Speyside with weight.

Most Popular Bottles
Dailuaine 16 Year Old (Flora & Fauna)
The best-known official bottling. Rich malt, dried fruit, and sherry warmth.
Independent 12–15 Year Old Releases
Often bourbon-cask matured, showing fruit and malty sweetness more clearly.
Older Single Cask Editions (18–25+ years)
More polished oak, deeper chocolate notes, and rounded spice.
Official core range releases are limited, so independent bottlings are common.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Dailuaine Distillery is located near Aberlour in Speyside and was founded in 1852 by William Mackenzie. It became one of the larger Speyside distilleries of its era and was rebuilt in 1884, at the time considered one of the most advanced distilleries in Scotland.
In 1889, Dailuaine became one of the founding members of DCL (Distillers Company Limited), the forerunner to modern Diageo ownership. Today, it remains an important production site primarily supplying malt whisky for blends.
Production
-
Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
-
Ownership: Diageo
-
Stills: Six large copper pot stills
-
Condensation: Traditional shell-and-tube condensers
-
Cask Policy: Predominantly ex-bourbon, with significant sherry cask maturation for official releases
Dailuaine produces a relatively weighty new-make spirit compared to many Speyside distilleries, which makes it particularly effective in blends that require body and structure.
Whisky Style
Dailuaine is known for:
-
Full-bodied Speyside character
-
Rich malt backbone
-
Nutty, meaty depth
-
Dried fruit and raisin notes
-
Firm oak spice
It is less overtly fruity than many neighbouring Speyside distilleries and leans toward a more robust, slightly savoury profile.
Key Expressions
-
Dailuaine 16 Year Old (Flora & Fauna) – Sherried, rich, and nutty
-
Independent bottlings (often cask strength)
-
Rare official releases beyond the Flora & Fauna range
Most production is allocated to blends such as Johnnie Walker, making official single malt bottlings comparatively limited.
Significance
Dailuaine is structurally important within the Scotch blending industry due to its weight and depth of spirit. While not heavily marketed as a standalone single malt, it is widely respected among enthusiasts for its muscular Speyside profile.
Its historical role in the formation of DCL also places it firmly within the industrial development of modern Scotch whisky.
