Everything you need to know about Fettercairn Distillery

A brief History

Fettercairn, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1824.

Where Highland Whisky Gets A Tropical Twist

Tucked away at the foot of the Cairngorm Mountains in the eastern Highlands, Fettercairn Distillery is a bit of a hidden gem – and frankly, I love that about it. While it doesn’t always make headlines, it quietly produces some of the most unique, fruit-forward single malts in the region.

Founded in 1824 by Sir Alexander Ramsay, Fettercairn has lived through the ups and downs of whisky history – prohibition, mothballing, and market shifts – yet it’s never lost its identity. These days, it’s known for a rather unusual cooling ring system around the stills that sprays water down the copper necks. This cools the spirit vapour rapidly and encourages heavier compounds to condense and fall back into the still – essentially creating a lighter, purer spirit. It’s weird. But it works. And if you’ve tasted Fettercairn, you’ll get why they kept doing it.

It’s not the peaty, smoky stuff some people expect from Scottish whisky. Fettercairn plays with exotic fruit, soft spice, and oak in a way that feels fresh and different. And yet, it still keeps its Highland roots firmly in place.

Flavour Profile:

Fettercairn is renowned for its bright, approachable single malts with a soft, tropical fruit character. These whiskies often carry notes of ripe banana, baked pear, and gentle spice, all layered over a sweet vanilla and toffee base. Aged versions bring more depth, introducing polished oak and even chocolatey undertones.
