A Coastal Distillery with Yorkshire Spirit
Set against the sweeping sea views of the Yorkshire coastline, Filey Bay isn’t your average whisky name—it’s the flagship single malt from the Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, and it's Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky. Filey Bay is a relatively new player in the whisky world, having launched its first release in 2019, but it already feels like it belongs.
The folks behind this coastal distillery took inspiration from tradition but decided not to be shackled by it. They grow their own barley on the family farm, distil on site using both pot and column stills (a rare combo in the UK), and age the spirit just a stone’s throw from the sea. There’s something refreshing and very "non-Scottish" about their approach—it’s whisky with boots firmly planted in Yorkshire soil, but with eyes on the wider whisky world.
If you’ve ever driven along the coast near Hunmanby and caught a whiff of sea air mixed with distant malt, you may already know Filey Bay in your bones. It’s a whisky born of its place—bright, breezy, and built with care.

Current Owner:
The distillery is independently owned by Tom Mellor and David Thompson, who founded it in 2016. Tom also runs Wold Top Brewery nearby, and their farming roots are key to the whole operation.
