A brief History

Foursquare, Barbados. Founded in 1996.

Where Tradition and Rebellion Collide

If you're looking for rum that proudly says, “I don’t play by the rules,” then Foursquare might just be your next obsession. Tucked away on the southern coast of Barbados, this distillery isn’t some tropical postcard cliché — it’s the epicentre of rum that dares to do things differently.

Foursquare Distillery was founded in 1996, but don’t let the relatively young age fool you. It sits on the site of an 18th-century sugar plantation, and the family behind it — the Seales — have been immersed in rum for generations. Richard Seale, the outspoken master distiller and blender, is known for his no-nonsense approach to honest rum-making. No sugar added. No shady ageing tricks. Just pure, well-crafted spirit made in both pot and column stills.

Foursquare is both fiercely Bajan and unapologetically modern. It’s gained a cult-like following thanks to its high-quality limited releases, experimental ageing, and a commitment to transparency that’s pretty rare in the rum world. Whether you're new to rum or neck-deep in the niche, Foursquare demands your attention — and rewards it with every sip.

You’ll often find notes of charred oak, pepper, and cocoa mingling with drier tropical fruits and spice. Some of the limited editions have even flirted with sherry, port, or Zinfandel cask ageing — adding deep layers without any artificial sweetening.

Ownership & History

Foursquare Distillery is independently owned and operated by R.L. Seale & Company, a fourth-generation family business. The Seale family has been producing rum in Barbados since the 1920s, and today, Richard Seale leads with a fiercely principled approach.

Unlike many Caribbean brands, Foursquare isn’t owned by a global drinks giant. It's still family-run — and that independence shows in the way they make rum with zero compromise.
