A brief History
Glen Elgin, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1898.
A Speyside Classic Tucked Off the Beaten Path
Glen Elgin isn’t usually the first name you hear when you get into Speyside whiskies — and honestly, that’s part of its charm. Tucked quietly just south of Elgin (as the name helpfully suggests), this distillery has been quietly making lovely, light, fruit-forward single malts for over a century.
Founded in 1898, Glen Elgin had a bit of a rocky start. It was built right before the whisky market crashed, so it didn’t have the smoothest early years. But like a stubborn Scotsman, it endured. Now part of Diageo’s huge family of distilleries, Glen Elgin is still turning out quality liquid — most of which ends up in blends like White Horse. But if you ever get your hands on a proper single malt bottling, you’re in for a soft-spoken Speyside gem.
Not flashy. Not loud. But if you like your drams elegant, balanced, and fruity with a touch of honey and malt, Glen Elgin is well worth exploring.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Glen Elgin Distillery is located near Elgin in Speyside and was founded in 1898, during the final years of the Victorian whisky expansion boom.
The distillery was designed specifically to produce malt whisky for blends and became particularly important within White Horse blended Scotch.
Despite its importance in blending, Glen Elgin remained relatively low-profile as a standalone single malt for much of its history.
Today, the distillery is owned by Diageo.
Production
- Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
- Region: Speyside
- Stills: Traditional copper pot stills with worm tub condensers
- Condensation Method: Worm tubs
- Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon maturation
The use of worm tubs contributes additional weight and texture to the spirit compared with modern shell-and-tube condensers.
Whisky Style
Glen Elgin whisky typically shows:
- Medium-bodied texture
- Honey and malt sweetness
- Orchard fruit and citrus
- Slightly oily mouthfeel
- Gentle spice and nutty notes
The profile is richer than many lighter Speyside malts.
Key Expressions
- Glen Elgin 12 Year Old – Core official bottling
- Flora & Fauna releases
- Independent bottlings and vintage releases
Official bottlings have historically been relatively limited.
Significance
Glen Elgin is an important historical component of White Horse blended Scotch whisky and is often regarded as a classic blending malt.
Its continued use of worm tub condensers also preserves a more traditional production style within modern Speyside whisky making.
