A brief History

Glen Scotia, Campbeltown Region, Scotland. Founded in 1832.

The Campbeltown Comeback Kid

There’s something gritty and romantic about Glen Scotia. It’s one of the few remaining distilleries from what was once the powerhouse whisky capital of the world — Campbeltown. Back in the day, this wee town on the west coast had over 30 distilleries crammed into its narrow streets. Now? Just a handful. And Glen Scotia is one of the ones still flying the flag — proudly and properly.

Founded in 1832, Glen Scotia has weathered just about every storm you can imagine: industry collapses, wartime closures, changing tastes... you name it. But through all the drama, it's kept making whisky with a very distinct Campbeltown character. A little coastal, a little oily, often a touch briny, and always full of personality.

The distillery today feels like a proper mix of old-school and new energy. It’s been modernised in all the right places but still feels like a place with stories in its walls. If you're into whiskies that stand out from the Speyside crowd, Glen Scotia will surprise you — in the best way.

Flavour Profile:

Fruity Oaky / Woody Briny / Maritime

Glen Scotia is known for its bold and often slightly coastal whisky character. Think salt spray on a wooden pier, dried fruit from a seaside bakery, and a bit of chewy oak spice. Depending on the cask — whether it’s ex-bourbon, sherry, or something more experimental — you’ll also find vanilla, plum, orange zest and even a faint whiff of smoke in some expressions.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Glen Scotia Distillery is located in Campbeltown, Scotland, and was founded in 1832.

Campbeltown was once one of the most important whisky-producing regions in Scotland, with more than 30 distilleries operating during the 19th century. Glen Scotia is one of only a few surviving distilleries from that era.

The distillery experienced multiple ownership changes and difficult periods during the decline of Campbeltown whisky production in the 20th century, but it survived while many others closed permanently.

Today, Glen Scotia is owned by Loch Lomond Group.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Region: Campbeltown
  • Stills: Traditional copper pot stills
  • Cask Policy: Bourbon, sherry, and specialty cask maturation

Production focuses on maintaining Campbeltown’s distinctive maritime whisky identity while offering a range of cask styles.

Whisky Style

Glen Scotia whisky typically shows:

  • Maritime salinity
  • Oily texture
  • Malt sweetness
  • Gentle smoke and spice
  • Dry, coastal finish

Compared with Springbank, the style is often slightly cleaner and more oak-forward.

Key Expressions

  • Glen Scotia Double Cask – Bourbon and PX sherry maturation
  • Glen Scotia 15 Year Old – Mature classic Campbeltown style
  • Victoriana – Heavier, cask-strength influenced release
  • Limited festival and older age-stated bottlings

Victoriana has become one of the distillery’s most recognised releases.

Significance

Glen Scotia is one of the key distilleries preserving the identity of the Campbeltown whisky region, one of Scotland’s officially recognised whisky-producing areas.

Its survival through the collapse of Campbeltown’s whisky industry makes it historically important within Scotch whisky heritage.
