Everything you need to know about Glenburgie Distillery

A brief History

Glenburgie, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1810.

The Blend Workhouse with Hidden Single Malt Charm

You’ve probably tasted Glenburgie whisky — even if you don’t know it yet. It’s one of those quietly essential distilleries whose spirit is the backbone of famous blends, most notably Ballantine’s. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find Glenburgie’s own single malt is seriously underrated and well worth a spot in your whisky cabinet.

The distillery was founded way back in 1810, though it officially registered in 1829 (things were a bit loose back then). Over the years, Glenburgie’s gone through closures, rebuilds, and ownership changes, but it’s always bounced back. Today, it’s owned by Chivas Brothers (part of Pernod Ricard), and while its single malt isn’t widely promoted, independent bottlings do surface — and when they do, they’re often excellent.

This is a whisky that rewards patience. It’s soft, fruity, and layered with gentle sweetness — not loud or smoky, just graceful and polished.

Flavour Profile:

Fruity Malty / Cereal Sweet

Glenburgie is known for its smooth and approachable style — often described as fruity with a cereal backbone and a touch of sweetness. Think baked apple, sponge cake, and a dash of vanilla cream. It’s the kind of dram you want to sip when you're settling into a quiet evening with good company (or a book you won’t finish).

Notable Bottles from Glenburgie

You won’t see a massive core range here, but what you can find includes:

  • Glenburgie 15 Year Old (Ballantine’s Single Malt series) – A beautifully soft and fruity dram. Really shows what Glenburgie can do on its own.

  • Gordon & MacPhail Glenburgie 21 & 25 Year Old – If you’re lucky enough to find these independent bottlings, they’re elegant and full of orchard fruit.

  • Signatory Vintage Releases – Often bottled as cask strength, non-chill filtered single malts. Great way to taste Glenburgie in a more raw form.

Unfortunately, Glenburgie is not open to the public. It’s a full-time production site with no official tours or visitor centre — but hey, that’s probably why they’ve got time to make such solid whisky.

Ownership & History

Current Owner:

  • Chivas Brothers / Pernod Ricard (since 2005)

Previously Owned By:

  • Hiram Walker (1936)

  • Allied Distillers

  • Ballantine’s (which was eventually rolled into Pernod Ricard)

Though it flies under the radar, Glenburgie is one of the most important distilleries behind blended Scotch’s global success — and when bottled solo, it proves it’s more than just a team player.
