Everything you need to know about Glencadam Distillery

A brief History

Glencadam, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1825.

A Highland Original That's Quietly Brilliant

Glencadam isn’t the loudest voice in the whisky world, but it’s one of those distilleries that whisky lovers nod at with quiet respect. Nestled in Brechin in the eastern Highlands, this distillery has been around since 1825 — older than most, and it hasn’t chased trends or flashy marketing. Glencadam just sticks to making solid, elegant single malts, and it’s been doing that for nearly two centuries.

The distillery went through a few sleepy periods (like many did), especially in the late 20th century, but got a fresh lease on life when Angus Dundee Distillers took over in 2003. Since then, it’s been gaining steady appreciation for its well-aged expressions and classic Highland character. If you enjoy bright, creamy, and slightly citrusy whisky that still feels honest and old-school, Glencadam should be on your radar.

Flavour Profile:

Fruity Malty / Cereal Sweet

Glencadam is known for its fresh, balanced, and slightly zesty single malts. The distillery doesn’t use peat, so you’ll get a clean profile filled with orchard fruits, bright citrus notes, and a creamy, biscuity backbone. It's like a walk through a summer orchard — light, breezy, and quietly satisfying.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Glencadam Distillery is located in Brechin, Angus, and was founded in 1825, shortly after the Excise Act helped formalise legal whisky distillation in Scotland.

The distillery has remained relatively small and understated compared with many larger Highland producers. Over its history, Glencadam primarily supplied malt whisky for blends before gradually developing a stronger single malt identity.

Today, the distillery is owned by Angus Dundee Distillers.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Region: Highlands
  • Stills: Traditional copper pot stills with upward-sloping lyne arms
  • Water Source: Loch Lee in the Angus Hills
  • Cask Policy: Primarily bourbon cask maturation with selective sherry influence

The still design contributes to a lighter and more delicate spirit character.

Whisky Style

Glencadam whisky typically shows:

  • Light to medium body
  • Floral and grassy notes
  • Orchard fruit and citrus
  • Vanilla and honey sweetness
  • Clean, elegant finish

The profile is refined and relatively unpeated.

Key Expressions

  • Glencadam 10 Year Old – Core flagship expression
  • Glencadam 15 Year Old
  • Glencadam Reserva Andalucía – Sherry-influenced maturation
  • Older age-stated and limited releases

The 10 Year Old is especially associated with the distillery’s fresh and elegant style.

Significance

Glencadam is often regarded as a classic example of a traditional lighter Highland malt, sitting stylistically close to some Lowland whiskies.

Its relatively low-profile reputation for many years has also made it something of an enthusiast-focused distillery rather than a heavily marketed global brand.
