A brief History
Glencraig, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1958.
A Rare Slice of Scotch Whisky History
If you're into the quirky corners of Scotch whisky, Glencraig is one of those names that stops you mid-scroll. It’s not a distillery in the usual sense — more of a mysterious side project born within another distillery’s walls. From 1958 to 1981, Glencraig was produced at the Glenburgie distillery, using Lomond stills. Why does that matter? Because those stills made a completely different style of spirit, more oily and funky, compared to Glenburgie’s usual soft Speyside notes.
The Glencraig name was used to bottle this unique whisky, which never had its own distillery buildings and was never released widely. Once the Lomond stills were removed in the early ‘80s, Glencraig’s brief life was over. That makes it a closed distillery and, more importantly for collectors, a rare one.
So if you ever come across a bottle, you’re not just drinking whisky — you’re sipping a short chapter in Scotland’s experimental whisky past.

Glencraig is known for its bold, slightly oily spirit. You’ll often find herbaceous and green notes, mingling with sweet orchard fruit and a touch of toasted malt. It’s quite different from traditional Speyside character — denser, richer, with more chew and complexity.

The Distillery
The Distiller: Glencraig produced within Glenburgie Distillery
Address: Glenburgie Distillery, Forres Road, Alves, Moray IV30 8XG
Visitor Centre
There is no visitor experience available for Glencraig, since it was never a stand-alone distillery. Glenburgie itself also doesn't operate a public visitor centre, so unfortunately you can’t drop by for a tasting.
Ownership & History
Ownership History:
-
Produced by Hiram Walker (later Allied Distillers) from 1958 to 1981
-
Pernod Ricard / Chivas Brothers now own the site (Glenburgie)
Glencraig was always an internal project — experimental and low-profile. The Lomond stills were scrapped, and with them, the Glencraig name faded into whisky legend.
Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Glencraig was a single malt Scotch whisky produced at Glenburgie Distillery in Speyside between 1958 and 1981.
Rather than being a separate distillery, Glencraig was created using unusual Lomond stills, a modified type of still designed to produce different spirit styles within the same distillery.
The whisky was developed during a period when distilleries experimented with alternative still technologies to create varied flavour profiles for blending purposes.
Production of Glencraig ended when the Lomond stills at Glenburgie were removed in the early 1980s.
Production
- Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
- Distillery: Glenburgie Distillery

The style differed somewhat from standard Glenburgie spirit due to the still design.
Key Expressions
Glencraig was rarely officially bottled during production. Most surviving releases are:
- Independent bottlings
- Rare vintage releases
- Older cask-strength bottlings
As production ceased decades ago, all stocks are finite.
Significance
Glencraig is notable as an example of the Scotch industry’s mid-20th-century experimentation with Lomond still technology.
Today, it is primarily of interest to enthusiasts and collectors interested in lost whisky styles and unusual production methods.
