Everything you need to know about Glendronach Distillery

A brief History

Glendronach, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1826.

The Sherry Bomb Legend of the Highlands

If you’re into big, bold, sherried whiskies, then Glendronach is your jam. This Highland distillery has been knocking out rich, fruity, spice-laden single malts since 1826. And unlike some modern distilleries chasing trends, Glendronach keeps it old school. We're talking heavy use of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, traditional wooden washbacks, and even a bit of coal-fired nostalgia in its DNA.

Founded by James Allardice (who supposedly once tricked innkeepers into stocking his whisky by claiming it cured the common cold — cheeky), Glendronach has gone from cult favourite to fan favourite. After a few sleepy decades under various ownerships, it saw a proper revival in the 2000s. Since then, it’s become the go-to dram for people who like their whisky deep, dark, and complex.

This isn’t your light and floral Highland. Glendronach plays in the deep end — and it does it beautifully.

Flavour Profile:

Fruity Rich / Chocolately Spicy

Glendronach is renowned for its rich, full-bodied single malts that ooze dark fruit, spice, and chocolate. It’s particularly famous for its use of Spanish sherry casks, which layer in those decadent dried fruit and spice notes. Think fruitcake soaked in whisky, dusted with cocoa, and served next to a roaring fire.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Glendronach Distillery is located near Huntly in the Highlands and was founded in 1826 by James Allardice, making it one of the oldest licensed distilleries in Scotland.

The distillery has built a strong reputation around heavily sherried single malt whisky, particularly through maturation in Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks.

After periods of closure and ownership changes during the 20th century, Glendronach was revived and repositioned as a premium single malt brand. It is currently owned by Brown-Forman.
