A brief History

Glenglassaugh, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1875.

From Forgotten Shores to New Beginnings

Glenglassaugh is a bit like that old seaside hotel that once faded into the background but then got a second life — and suddenly, everyone wants to stay there. Perched right on the edge of Sandend Bay in the northeast of Scotland, this coastal distillery has had more comebacks than a boy band. Built in 1875, mothballed in 1986, then revived in 2008, it’s now enjoying a proper renaissance under new owners who actually know what to do with good whisky.

For years, Glenglassaugh was a name whispered by independent bottlers and whisky geeks. The original spirit — fruity, coastal, sometimes a bit nutty — had something about it. Now, with a new lineup of age-stated whiskies, bolder branding, and solid distilling talent behind the scenes, it’s come roaring back.

This is a distillery that straddles eras. Old-school coastal Highland vibes meet new-world presentation and energy. If you like your whisky with character, history, and a sea breeze twist, this one should be on your list.

Flavour Profile:

Fruity Oaky / Woody Briny / Maritime

Glenglassaugh is known for its bright fruitiness wrapped in a distinct coastal edge. There’s always a hit of salt in the air and just enough oak spice to keep things grounded. Expect orchard fruit upfront, a touch of vanilla sweetness, and a dry, briny finish that makes it feel very much born by the sea.

Notable Bottles from Glenglassaugh

  • Glenglassaugh 12 Year Old – A fresh reintroduction to the core range. Pears, spice, sea salt and balance.

  • Torfa – Peated, youthful, smoky, and bold. A nice contrast to the main range.

  • Revival / Evolution / Torfa (Old Range) – Earlier non-age-stated releases that marked the brand’s 2008 revival.

  • Rare Cask Releases – Older stock distilled pre-1986, often sold via special editions and indie bottlers. Not cheap, but collectors love them.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Glenglassaugh Distillery is located near Portsoy on the Moray Firth coast and was founded in 1875 by James Moir and his nephews.

The distillery experienced multiple ownership changes and lengthy periods of closure during the 20th century. It became particularly notable after being revived in 2008 following more than two decades of inactivity.

Today, Glenglassaugh is owned by Brown-Forman and has been repositioned as a coastal Highland single malt distillery with a stronger premium identity.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Region: Highlands
  • Location: Coastal distillery on the Moray Firth
  • Stills: Copper pot stills
  • Cask Policy: Bourbon, sherry, wine, and specialty cask maturation

The distillery focuses heavily on coastal maturation influence combined with modern cask management.

Whisky Style

Glenglassaugh whisky typically shows:

  • Coastal salinity
  • Tropical and orchard fruit notes
  • Honey and vanilla sweetness
  • Gentle spice
  • Soft maritime finish

Compared with many Highland malts, the profile often emphasises freshness and coastal character.

Key Expressions

  • Glenglassaugh Sandend – Fruity coastal expression
  • Glenglassaugh Portsoy – More heavily peated style
  • Glenglassaugh 12 Year Old – Core mature expression
  • Limited wine and specialty cask releases

The modern range focuses on accessible coastal styles with varied cask influence.

Significance

Glenglassaugh is one of several Scottish distilleries successfully revived after long closure periods during the whisky downturn of the late 20th century.

Its modern relaunch reflects the growing demand for distinctive regional single malts and the commercial value of restoring historic distillery names.
