A brief History
Glenkinchie, Lowlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1825.
Lowland Lightness with a Backbone
Glenkinchie is the Lowlands' quiet workhorse — elegant, delicate, and just a short hop from Edinburgh, yet often overlooked. This distillery is sometimes referred to as “The Edinburgh Malt” because it’s the closest working distillery to the city, nestled in the rolling farmland of East Lothian.
Founded in 1825 by two farming brothers, John and George Rate, Glenkinchie has seen its fair share of change. It was rebuilt in the 1890s, survived the difficult post-war period, and eventually found its groove as part of Diageo’s Classic Malts range. Glenkinchie might not shout about itself, but it plays a crucial role in blends like Johnnie Walker and also offers a surprisingly robust single malt — especially for a Lowland.
There’s a subtle complexity behind the easy-drinking style — think floral notes, creamy malt, and soft citrus. It’s light but not weak. Accessible but not boring. And if you ever tour the place, the setting is pure countryside calm.

Glenkinchie’s whiskies are often described as light and fresh, with a creamy maltiness and soft fruitiness at the core. It’s not a whisky that’s going to hit you over the head with peat or sherry. Instead, it quietly builds complexity with every sip. You’ll usually find notes of orchard fruit, meadow grass, gentle vanilla, and a clean, dry finish.
