Everything you need to know about Glenugie Distillery
Most popular bottles from the distillery
A brief History
Glenugie, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1831.
Glenugie is one of those names that whisky lovers whisper about with a mix of reverence and frustration. Reverence because the distillery’s whiskies are highly regarded and incredibly rare. Frustration because it was closed down long ago, and its remaining releases are few and far between.
Located in the northeast of Scotland, Glenugie was founded in 1831 in the town of Fraserburgh. For much of its history, Glenugie was a relatively quiet distillery. It didn’t attract much attention until later in the 20th century when its distinctive, oily, and peaty character began to earn recognition. Glenugie was also one of the last distilleries to distil whisky using direct-fired stills — a traditional, now-rare method that added depth and richness to the spirit.
Sadly, Glenugie closed its doors in 1983, and although its whiskies are legendary among collectors, the distillery’s equipment was dismantled. The bottles that remain are prized for their unique character, with independent bottlings offering the last glimpses into this now-defunct distillery’s past.
If you ever come across a bottle of Glenugie, it’s more than just whisky. It’s a small piece of history.

Glenugie whiskies are known for their distinctive, full-bodied style. The spirit is rich and often oily, with a gentle peat smoke that blends seamlessly with dark chocolate, cocoa, and wood-spiced notes. There’s a lovely complexity to the whisky, with honeyed sweetness adding a touch of balance to the smoky depth. It’s a whisky that feels weighty on the palate, with a long, warming finish.
If you like peat, but you’re after something less brash than Islay, Glenugie is a fantastic alternative. The richness of the spirit, combined with the fine wood influence, makes it a whisky that’s both approachable and fascinating.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Glenugie Distillery was located in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, and was founded in 1831.
The distillery operated for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, primarily producing malt whisky for blends rather than for official single malt bottlings.
Like many smaller distilleries, Glenugie struggled during periods of industry contraction and was eventually closed in 1983 during the major Scotch whisky downturn.
The site was later demolished and redeveloped.
