Everything you need to know about Glenugie Distillery

A brief History

Glenugie, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1831.

Glenugie is one of those names that whisky lovers whisper about with a mix of reverence and frustration. Reverence because the distillery’s whiskies are highly regarded and incredibly rare. Frustration because it was closed down long ago, and its remaining releases are few and far between.

Located in the northeast of Scotland, Glenugie was founded in 1831 in the town of Fraserburgh. For much of its history, Glenugie was a relatively quiet distillery. It didn’t attract much attention until later in the 20th century when its distinctive, oily, and peaty character began to earn recognition. Glenugie was also one of the last distilleries to distil whisky using direct-fired stills — a traditional, now-rare method that added depth and richness to the spirit.

Sadly, Glenugie closed its doors in 1983, and although its whiskies are legendary among collectors, the distillery’s equipment was dismantled. The bottles that remain are prized for their unique character, with independent bottlings offering the last glimpses into this now-defunct distillery’s past.

If you ever come across a bottle of Glenugie, it’s more than just whisky. It’s a small piece of history.

Taste Profile

Peaty / Smoky

Rich / Chocolately Oaky / Woody

Glenugie whiskies are known for their distinctive, full-bodied style. The spirit is rich and often oily, with a gentle peat smoke that blends seamlessly with dark chocolate, cocoa, and wood-spiced notes. There’s a lovely complexity to the whisky, with honeyed sweetness adding a touch of balance to the smoky depth. It’s a whisky that feels weighty on the palate, with a long, warming finish.

If you like peat, but you’re after something less brash than Islay, Glenugie is a fantastic alternative. The richness of the spirit, combined with the fine wood influence, makes it a whisky that’s both approachable and fascinating.

Most Popular Glenugie Bottles

Given the distillery’s closure in the early 1980s, you’ll be lucky to find these, but when you do, they’re worth the search:

  • Glenugie 1967 18 Year Old
One of the most sought-after releases. Rich, peaty, and beautifully balanced with dark chocolate and oak spice.

  • Glenugie 1975 12 Year Old
A classic bottling with the oily, peaty character that Glenugie is known for. Soft yet bold.

  • Glenugie 1977 20 Year Old
Mellowed with age, the peat is less pronounced here, giving more room for rich oak, honey, and cocoa.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Glenugie Distillery was located in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, and was founded in 1831.

The distillery operated for much of the 19th and 20th centuries, primarily producing malt whisky for blends rather than for official single malt bottlings.

Like many smaller distilleries, Glenugie struggled during periods of industry contraction and was eventually closed in 1983 during the major Scotch whisky downturn.

The site was later demolished and redeveloped.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
  • Region: Highlands
  • Stills: Copper pot stills
  • Production Role: Mainly blending component

Most of Glenugie’s production historically disappeared into blends, leaving relatively few official releases.

Whisky Style

Glenugie whisky is generally described as:

  • Medium-bodied
  • Fruity and floral
  • Honey and malt sweetness
  • Slightly waxy texture
  • Dry, elegant finish

Older bottlings can show tropical fruit and mineral characteristics.

Key Expressions

Known surviving releases include:

  • Rare Malts Selection Glenugie
  • Independent bottlings from remaining casks
  • Vintage collector releases

As a closed distillery, all existing stocks are finite and increasingly rare.

Significance

Glenugie is one of the many lost Highland distilleries closed during the restructuring of the Scotch whisky industry in the 1980s.

Its remaining bottlings are valued by collectors and enthusiasts interested in historic distillery character and older Highland whisky styles.
