A brief History
Glenury, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1825.
Glenury—often referred to as Glenury Royal—is one of those distilleries that feels like a small but important piece of Scotch history.
Founded in 1825 in Stonehaven, just south of Aberdeen, it was one of the earlier licensed distilleries following the Excise Act. The founder, Captain Robert Barclay Allardice, wasn’t your typical whisky man either. He was better known for endurance feats—long-distance walking challenges that made him something of a local legend. Not exactly the usual distillery backstory.
The “Royal” part of the name came later, after a visit from King William IV, which gave the distillery a bit of status at the time.
Glenury never grew into a large-scale operation. It remained relatively small, producing whisky mainly for blending, though some single malt releases did appear over the years. The distillery eventually closed in 1985, and the site was later redeveloped for housing.
I always think of Glenury as one of those quiet Highland distilleries—never dominant, but still respected, especially now that it’s gone.

Glenury is known for its soft, balanced, and slightly fruity profile. You’ll usually pick up orchard fruits like apple and pear, followed by a gentle honeyed sweetness. There’s a light malt backbone underneath, keeping everything grounded without adding heaviness.
The finish tends to be clean and fairly short, with a subtle citrus lift.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Glenury Royal Distillery was located in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire, and was founded in 1825 by Captain Robert Barclay.
It became one of the few distilleries to receive a Royal Warrant from King William IV, allowing it to use the “Royal” designation — a rare honour in Scotch whisky.
The distillery operated for much of the 19th and 20th centuries but faced intermittent closures. It was ultimately closed in 1985 during the whisky industry downturn and later demolished, with the site redeveloped for housing.
Production
- Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
- Region: Highlands
- Stills: Copper pot stills
- Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon with some sherry influence
- Primary Role: Supplying malt whisky for blends
Like many distilleries of its time, Glenury Royal was more important for blending than for branded single malt releases.
Whisky Style
Glenury Royal whisky is typically described as:
- Medium-bodied
- Honeyed and malty
- Soft fruit (apple, citrus)
- Light spice
- Smooth, balanced finish
Older bottlings often show more complexity with refined oak influence.
Key Expressions
- Glenury Royal 12 Year Old (Rare Malts series)
- Diageo Special Releases (aged expressions)
- Independent bottlings from remaining casks
As a closed distillery, all releases come from finite remaining stock.
Significance
Glenury Royal is one of Scotland’s lost distilleries, with its remaining bottles becoming increasingly rare and collectible.
Its Royal Warrant and long history add to its prestige, while its closure reflects the wider contraction of the Scotch whisky industry in the 1980s.
