A brief History
Hanyu, Japan. Founded in 1941.
Hanyu is one of those names that serious whisky collectors speak about in slightly hushed tones. Not because it’s trendy. Because it’s gone.
Founded in 1941 in Saitama Prefecture, Japan, Hanyu was a small, family-run distillery owned by the Akuto family. It never produced whisky on the scale of Scotland’s big names. Instead, it quietly made malt whisky for domestic blends, ticking along without much international attention.
Then it closed in 2000. Production stopped. The stills were dismantled. For a while, that could have been the end of the story.
But Ichiro Akuto, grandson of the founder, rescued what casks he could. From those remaining barrels came the now-famous “Card Series” bottlings — 54 single casks, each named after a playing card. Collect them all and you had a full deck. Today, full sets command serious auction prices.
What makes Hanyu special isn’t hype. It’s rarity plus quality. A lost Japanese distillery whose remaining stock turned out to be genuinely excellent.

Rich / Chocolatey | Fruity |
Hanyu whiskies are known for their weight and depth. Many matured in sherry casks, which gave them rich dried fruit notes, dark chocolate, and warming oak spice. There’s often a thick, almost oily texture that coats the palate.
Older expressions show layers of cocoa, honeyed sweetness, and polished wood. Some casks lean slightly earthy or leathery.
It’s not light or delicate Japanese whisky. It’s muscular, intense, and complex — closer in style to heavily sherried Scotch than the clean floral style many associate with Japan.
