A brief History
Haran, Spain. Founded in 1831.
Haran is the whisky brand produced by Destilerías Manuel Acha, the oldest operating distillery in the Basque Country and one of the oldest family-run spirits producers in Spain. The company was founded in 1831 in Bilbao before moving to Amurrio in the late nineteenth century, where it remains today.
The story of Haran whisky stretches back almost a century. In 1926, Martín Acha, grandson of founder Manuel Acha, travelled to Scotland to study whisky production and maturation. Although whisky production did not immediately become a major part of the business, the knowledge remained within the family and eventually formed the basis of the modern Haran range.
The name Haran means "valley" in the Basque language and refers to the Ayala Valley, where the distillery is located. Today, Haran has become one of Spain's best-known premium whisky brands, producing a range of mature malt whiskies that showcase the unique character of the Basque Country.
