A brief History

Impeiral, Speyside Region, Scotland. Founded in 1897.

Imperial was never a household name, but among collectors it carries real weight.

Founded in 1897 in Carron, Speyside, Imperial opened during a whisky boom — and promptly closed the following year when the market turned. That stop-start pattern defined much of its life. The distillery reopened in 1919, then closed again in 1925. It wasn’t until the 1950s that Imperial settled into more consistent production.

For most of its working years, Imperial produced malt for blending rather than a large single malt range. That’s why older bottlings are relatively scarce. The distillery finally closed for good in 1998, and the buildings were demolished in 2013.

Today, Imperial exists only in cask. And as those casks are bottled, the name becomes rarer each year.

Taste Profile

Fruity

Malty / Cereal Sweet

Imperial’s style was classic Speyside — clean, fruit-led, and softly sweet. Orchard fruit and honeyed notes sit at the forefront, supported by gentle vanilla from American oak.

With longer maturation, the whisky develops more depth, sometimes showing tropical fruit and richer texture. There’s no peat emphasis here. The spirit leans elegant rather than powerful.

Older independent bottlings often highlight a slightly waxy texture and polished oak character.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Imperial Distillery was located in Carron, near Aberlour in Speyside. It was originally founded in 1897 by Thomas Mackenzie (of Talisker fame) to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.

Imperial had a fragmented operating history. It opened and closed multiple times throughout the 20th century, reflecting broader industry cycles. It was mothballed in 1998 and permanently closed in 2013. The site was demolished in 2016 and later redeveloped as Dalmunach Distillery by Chivas Brothers.

Imperial is now officially a closed distillery.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky

  • Stills: Traditional copper pot stills

  • Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon maturation

  • Primary Use: Blending stock (notably for Ballantine’s under Allied Distillers ownership)

Imperial was not heavily marketed as a standalone single malt during its operational life, with most output directed into blends.

Whisky Style

Imperial is generally characterised by:

  • Medium-bodied Speyside profile

  • Sweet malt core

  • Fresh orchard fruit

  • Honey and vanilla

  • Clean, slightly herbal finish

Older bottlings often show elegant maturity with restrained oak rather than heavy sherry dominance.

Key Expressions

  • Imperial 1995 / 1996 vintage releases

  • Rare official bottlings prior to closure

  • Independent cask-strength releases

  • Limited Special Releases from Diageo-era stock

Since closure, Imperial bottlings have become increasingly scarce.

Significance

Imperial represents a classic example of a Speyside “blending malt” that rarely had a strong consumer-facing identity.

Its demolition and replacement by Dalmunach reflect modern Scotch industry consolidation and production redesign. As a closed distillery, Imperial now holds collector interest, particularly well-aged independent bottlings from the 1990s.
