A brief History

Indri, India. Founded in 2021.

Indri Distillery is part of the newer wave of Indian single malt whisky, and it’s quickly become one of the more talked-about names in that space. It’s based in the village of Indri in Haryana, not far from the Yamuna river and within reach of the Himalayan foothills.

The distillery is owned by Piccadilly Distillery, and its first major release arrived in the early 2020s. What makes Indri interesting is how it leans into its environment. India’s warmer climate speeds up the ageing process, so the whisky takes on cask influence much faster than you’d expect in Scotland. That means even younger whisky can feel quite full and developed.

The flagship release, “The Three Wood” (Trini), focuses on using different cask types to build flavour early. It’s a modern approach, but it works — the whisky feels bold, layered, and very much shaped by where it’s made.

Flavour Profile:

Sweet

Fruity
Spicy

Indri whiskies tend to be rich from the start. You’ll usually pick up vanilla and honey sweetness first, followed by deeper notes of dried fruit. The oak comes through clearly — not harsh, but noticeable — bringing spice and structure.

Because of the climate, everything feels slightly amplified. The whisky develops quickly, so you get a fuller flavour profile earlier in its life. It’s less about subtlety and more about impact.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Indri-Trini Distillery is located in the village of Indri in Haryana, northern India, near the foothills of the Himalayas. It was established by Piccadilly Distillery and launched its first whisky in 2021, marking one of India’s newest entries into the premium single malt category.

The name “Trini” refers to the distillery’s signature use of three different types of wooden casks in maturation.

Indri is part of the rapidly growing Indian single malt whisky movement, alongside more established producers such as Amrut and Paul John.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Indian single malt whisky

  • Stills: Copper pot stills

  • Climate: Hot Indian climate with high evaporation rates

  • Cask Policy: Triple wood maturation (bourbon, wine, and PX sherry casks)

  • Water Source: Himalayan-fed water systems

The warm climate leads to faster maturation, with significant interaction between spirit and oak.

Whisky Style

Indri whisky typically shows:

  • Rich dried fruit

  • Honey and caramel sweetness

  • Vanilla and toffee

  • Spice from sherry casks

  • Full-bodied texture

The triple wood approach creates a layered profile combining sweetness, fruit, and spice.

Key Expressions

  • Limited edition and cask-strength variants

The Three Wood expression defines the distillery’s identity.

Significance

Indri represents the next phase of Indian single malt whisky, building on the global success of earlier Indian producers.

Its rapid rise highlights India’s importance as both a major whisky-consuming market and an increasingly credible producer of premium single malt whisky.
