A brief History
Kaikyo, Japan. Founded in 2017.
Kaikyo is one of the newer names in Japanese whisky, but it comes from a company with a surprisingly long history.
The distillery sits in Akashi, near the coast in Hyogo Prefecture, and is operated by the Yonezawa family—people better known historically for producing sake and shochu rather than whisky. That background matters because it gives Kaikyo a slightly different feel compared to some of the older Japanese whisky houses.
The actual whisky distillery opened in 2017, making it relatively young by whisky standards. And you can taste that youth in some releases. But rather than trying to imitate Scotland exactly, Kaikyo leans into a cleaner, lighter style that suits modern Japanese whisky quite well.
You’ll often see the names Hatozaki and Akashi linked to the distillery. These are the whisky brands most associated with Kaikyo, ranging from blended whiskies through to small batch single malts.
I tend to think of Kaikyo as part of the next generation of Japanese whisky—less formal, slightly more experimental, and still building its identity.

Kaikyo is known for its smooth, approachable, and lightly fruity profile. You’ll usually get soft vanilla sweetness first, followed by orchard fruits like apple and pear. The oak influence is present but controlled, keeping the whisky clean and balanced.
Some releases introduce gentle spice or extra richness from cask finishing, but the overall style stays fairly elegant.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Kaikyō Distillery is located in Akashi, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, and is operated by the Eigashima Shuzo company, a producer with a long history in sake and shochu production dating back to the 19th century.
The company received one of Japan’s earliest whisky licences in 1919, although whisky production remained relatively small-scale for much of its history.
Modern whisky production expanded significantly with the opening of the dedicated Kaikyō Distillery in 2017, supplementing the older White Oak distillery facilities.
The whiskies are commonly marketed under the Akashi and Akashi White Oak names.
