Everything you need to know about Karuizawa Distillery
Most popular bottles from the distillery
A brief History
Karuizawa, Japan. Founded in 1955.
Karuizawa is one of those names that carries a bit of weight. Not because it’s big or still producing—but because it isn’t. This is a closed Japanese distillery, and that fact alone has turned its whiskies into something close to legend.
Founded in 1955 on the slopes of Mount Asama in Nagano, Karuizawa was never a mass-production operation. It worked quietly, using traditional methods and often sherry casks imported from Spain, which wasn’t common in Japan at the time. Production was relatively small, and for years, the distillery flew under the radar.
Then it closed in 2000.
What happened next is what makes Karuizawa so interesting. As remaining casks were discovered and released over time, people started to notice. Really notice. The whisky was deep, rich, and unapologetically intense. Prices climbed. Bottles disappeared. And suddenly, Karuizawa went from overlooked to highly sought-after.
If you ever get the chance to try one, you’ll understand why. It’s not subtle. It’s not trying to please everyone. It just does its own thing—and does it very well.

Karuizawa is known for its intense, full-bodied profile, largely shaped by its use of sherry casks. Expect deep layers of dried fruit, dark chocolate, and warming spice. The oak influence is strong, giving structure and a slightly dry edge to balance the richness.
There’s often a weight to it—almost chewy in texture. This isn’t a light, easy-drinking whisky. It’s something you sit with, take your time over, and come back to.
