A brief History
Kavalan, Taiwan. Founded in 2005.
Kanosuke is one of the most talked-about names in modern Japanese whisky. It’s young, ambitious, and very clear about its identity. The distillery opened in 2017 in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Japan, built by the Komasa Jyozo company — a family business better known for shochu production.
What makes Kanosuke interesting is how it blends Japanese precision with coastal influence. The site sits close to the East China Sea. Warm air, salt breeze, and a relatively mild climate all shape the maturation process.
Unlike older Japanese distilleries that often lean toward Scotch tradition, Kanosuke feels modern from the ground up. Clean design. Carefully selected yeast strains. A strong focus on cask management. They even use three different pot still shapes to create blending flexibility in-house.

Kavalan Distillery is located in Yilan County, Taiwan, and was founded in 2005 by the King Car Group. Production began in 2006, and the first bottlings were released in 2008 — an extremely short timeline by Scotch standards.
The distillery was established with a clear objective: produce world-class single malt whisky outside traditional whisky-producing nations. Within a decade, Kavalan gained global recognition, particularly after blind tastings in Europe placed it ahead of established Scotch names.
