Everything you need to know about Kinclaith Distillery

A brief History
Kinclaith, Lowlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1957.
Kinclaith is one of the more unusual distilleries in Scotch whisky history—and not because of what it produced, but where it sat.
It was built in 1957 inside the Strathclyde grain distillery in Glasgow, which is already a bit odd. Most distilleries stand on their own. Kinclaith didn’t. It was effectively a malt distillery operating within a grain distillery complex, which gives you an idea of its purpose.
This wasn’t about building a big single malt brand. It was about supplying spirit for blends—quietly, efficiently, and without much attention. And for the most part, that’s exactly what happened.
Production ran until 1975, after which Kinclaith was dismantled to make room for expansion of the grain distillery. That short lifespan means there’s very little whisky left today, and even fewer people who’ve actually tried it.
I tend to think of Kinclaith as a functional distillery—built for a job, did the job, and then disappeared.

| Malty / Cereal | Fruity | Sweet |
Kinclaith is believed to have produced a light, clean, and slightly sweet malt whisky, designed to sit comfortably within blends. Expect soft cereal notes, a touch of vanilla sweetness, and light fruit in the background.
There’s no indication of heavy peat or strong oak influence. The focus would have been balance and neutrality.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Kinclaith Distillery was a short-lived malt whisky distillery located in Glasgow, operating within the same complex as Strathclyde Distillery.
It was founded in 1957 by Schenley Industries, making it unusual as one of the few malt distilleries built in Scotland during the mid-20th century.
Kinclaith was designed to produce malt whisky specifically for blending purposes rather than for standalone single malt releases.
The distillery closed in 1975, after less than 20 years of operation, and was later dismantled.
Production
- Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky
- Region: Lowlands (Glasgow)
- Location: Within the Strathclyde grain distillery complex
- Stills: Copper pot stills
- Primary Role: Supplying malt whisky for blends
Kinclaith operated as part of a larger grain distillery site, which was unusual for a malt distillery.
Whisky Style
Kinclaith whisky is generally described as:
- Light and delicate
- Soft malt sweetness
- Gentle fruit notes
- Clean and simple profile
As most production went into blends, detailed style records are limited.
Key Expressions
Kinclaith was rarely bottled officially. Known releases include:
- Independent bottlings from remaining casks
- Occasional rare vintage releases
All existing bottles come from finite stocks due to its early closure.
Significance
Kinclaith is a rare example of a modern-era lost distillery with a very short lifespan.
Its location within a grain distillery complex and its blending-focused role make it an unusual case in Scotch whisky history, and surviving bottles are now of interest primarily to collectors.
