It opened in 2014 in Fife, not far from St Andrews, on a converted farm site. The aim was straightforward: produce a light, elegant Lowland-style single malt using local barley.

Unlike some new distilleries that chase smoke or heavy sherry influence, Kingsbarns chose a softer path. Clean spirit. Careful fermentation. A strong focus on bourbon cask maturation. The result is whisky that feels fresh and accessible rather than dense or challenging.

I’ve always thought of Kingsbarns as precision whisky. It doesn’t try to overwhelm you. It tries to be clear and balanced. That restraint works in its favour.

Kingsbarns single malts are typically light and fruit-led. Orchard fruit notes — apple and pear — sit alongside honeyed sweetness and creamy vanilla from American oak casks. The malt character is clean and slightly biscuity.
