A brief History

Lagg, Islands Region, Scotland. Founded in 2019.

Lagg exists because Arran wanted a second voice — darker, smokier, and more assertive.

Opened in 2019 on the south coast of the Isle of Arran, Lagg is the heavily peated counterpoint to the lighter, fruit-led Arran Distillery at Lochranza in the north. Same island. Same owner. Completely different personality.

Where Lochranza leans clean and elegant, Lagg leans earthy and robust. The peat levels are high by island standards, and the distillery was designed from the ground up to handle that style properly. Taller stills. Longer fermentation. A focus on building weight and texture rather than delicacy.

Lagg doesn’t pretend to be old-school. It’s modern, deliberate, and very clear about what it wants to be. This is Arran’s smoky side — coastal, muscular, and unapologetic.

Taste Profile

Peaty / Smoky

Spicy Oaky / Woody

Lagg whisky is bold from the first sip. The peat is earthy and smoky rather than medicinal, closer to damp soil and bonfire ash than iodine. Beneath that smoke sits a solid malt base, with spice and oak adding structure.

You’ll often find cracked pepper, toasted cereal, and warming spice working alongside the smoke. The finish is dry, smoky, and persistent, with oak keeping everything grounded.

This is not a soft island malt. It’s built for drinkers who like their whisky to push back a bit.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Lagg Distillery is located in the south of the Isle of Arran and began production in 2019. It was established by Isle of Arran Distillers, the same company behind the Lochranza (Arran) Distillery.

The creation of Lagg was intentional: to produce a distinctly heavily peated style of Arran whisky, contrasting with the unpeated, fruit-driven character of Lochranza. The name “Lagg” references a historic illicit distilling area on Arran known for smoky spirits.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky

  • Peat Level: Heavy peat (typically ~50 ppm)

  • Stills: Copper pot stills designed for robust spirit

  • Fermentation: Optimised for weight and structure rather than fruitiness

  • Cask Policy: Ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks

The distillery’s production regime is designed to support peat-forward flavour while retaining sufficient body for long-term maturation.

Whisky Style

Lagg is defined by:

  • Bold peat smoke

  • Earthy, ashy phenolics

  • Black pepper and spice

  • Malt sweetness beneath the smoke

  • Dry, structured finish

The style is closer to mainland peated malts than to Islay’s medicinal profile.

Key Expressions

  • Lagg Kilmory Edition – First core release, bourbon-led maturation

  • Lagg Corriecravie Edition – Higher strength, deeper peat intensity

  • Limited batch and cask-strength releases

The range is intentionally narrow, focusing on refining a clear peated identity.

Significance

Lagg gives Arran a dual-distillery identity: unpeated elegance at Lochranza and robust peat at Lagg.

It strengthens Arran’s positioning in the peated single malt category without diluting the established Arran brand, and demonstrates how modern distillers can use parallel sites to pursue divergent styles with clarity.
