A brief History

Ledaig, Islands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1798.

Ledaig is what happens when the Isle of Mull decides to show its rougher side.

Produced at Tobermory Distillery, Ledaig is the heavily peated expression from a distillery better known for its lighter, unpeated Tobermory single malt. Same stills. Same location. Completely different personality.

The distillery itself dates back to 1798, making it one of Scotland’s older sites. For much of its life, Tobermory’s output went quietly into blends, and its own single malts flew under the radar. Ledaig changed that. When peat was reintroduced, it revealed a whisky with serious weight — smoky, coastal, and unapologetically bold.

Ledaig isn’t polished or pretty. It’s earthy, industrial, and maritime, with a style that feels closer to old-school island whisky than modern refinement. If you like smoke with muscle, this is where Mull delivers.

Taste Profile

Peaty / Smoky

Spicy Briny / Maritime

Ledaig opens with dense, oily peat smoke — more earthy and ashy than medicinal. There’s a clear maritime edge too: sea spray, salt, and damp coastal air.

Underneath the smoke sits a malty backbone with peppery spice and solid oak structure. Sherry-matured editions often add dried fruit and darker sweetness, but the smoke never steps aside.

The texture is heavy and mouth-coating. The finish is long, smoky, and salty, with spice lingering after the peat fades.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Ledaig is the heavily peated single malt produced at Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull. The distillery was founded in 1798, making it one of Scotland’s oldest, though its operating history includes multiple closures.

The name Ledaig (pronounced led-chig) derives from the Gaelic name for Tobermory. Historically, Tobermory produced both peated and unpeated spirit, but in modern production Ledaig is clearly defined as the distillery’s peated identity, distinct from the unpeated Tobermory single malt.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky

  • Peat Level: Heavily peated (typically ~30–40 ppm)

  • Stills: Copper pot stills with relatively broad necks

  • Fermentation: Moderate length, prioritising weight and structure

  • Cask Policy: Predominantly ex-bourbon, with sherry and wine cask variants

  • Water Source: Mishnish Loch

Peated runs are scheduled separately from unpeated Tobermory production to preserve stylistic clarity.

Whisky Style

Ledaig is known for a robust, industrial peat profile, distinct from Islay.

Typical characteristics:

  • Dense, earthy smoke

  • Ash, tar, and black pepper

  • Maritime salinity

  • Underlying malty sweetness

  • Dry, savoury finish

The peat character is dirtier and more mechanical than medicinal, often described as smoky and coastal rather than iodine-heavy.

Key Expressions

  • Ledaig 10 Year Old – Core release; peated, coastal, structured

  • Ledaig 18 Year Old – Softer smoke with deeper oak and spice

  • Ledaig Sinclair Series (legacy) – Heavily peated variants

  • Limited cask-strength and wine-cask finishes

Independent bottlings of Ledaig are also common and often highly regarded.

Significance

Ledaig occupies a unique niche: a heavily peated island malt outside Islay with a clearly different smoke character.

It has become increasingly respected among peat-focused whisky drinkers seeking intensity without Islay’s medicinal profile. As Tobermory Distillery stabilised production in recent decades, Ledaig has emerged as one of Scotland’s most characterful peated malts.
