A brief History
Legent, Kentucky Region, USA. Founded in 2019.
Legent is a bit of an odd one—in a good way. It’s not trying to fit neatly into the usual bourbon category, and it’s not pretending to be a traditional Japanese whisky either. Instead, it sits right in the middle.
The project brings together two big names: Fred Noe from Kentucky and Shinji Fukuyo from Japan. That pairing tells you most of what you need to know. One side brings classic bourbon—rich, sweet, oak-driven. The other brings a more precise approach to blending and finishing.
Legent starts life as a standard Kentucky straight bourbon from Jim Beam. After that, it’s partially finished in wine and sherry casks, then blended back together. That extra step is where things shift. It takes a familiar bourbon base and adds layers you don’t always expect—slightly drier, a bit more complex, and less predictable.
I’d describe it as a bridge whisky. If you’re used to bourbon, it gives you something new without going too far. If you’re coming from Scotch or Japanese whisky, it feels like a softer entry into American styles.

Spicy | Rich / Chocolatey |
Legent is known for its layered, slightly richer bourbon profile. You’ll usually get caramel and vanilla up front—very familiar bourbon territory. Then it shifts. The finishing casks bring in darker fruit notes and a bit of spice, giving it more depth than you might expect.
The finish is where it stands out most. It’s a touch drier, with oak and gentle spice lingering rather than fading quickly.

Distillery Facts
Overview & History
Legent is a modern American whiskey brand launched in 2019 as a collaboration between Fred Noe, Master Distiller at Jim Beam, and Shinji Fukuyo, Chief Blender at Suntory.
The project was designed to combine traditional Kentucky bourbon production with Japanese blending and finishing techniques, creating a hybrid style that reflects both traditions.
Legent represents a cross-cultural approach to whiskey-making, rather than a purely regional product.
Production
- Category: Kentucky Straight Bourbon (with secondary maturation)
- Distillery: Jim Beam Distillery, Kentucky
- Mash Bill: Traditional Jim Beam bourbon recipe
- Primary Maturation: New charred American oak
- Secondary Maturation: Finished in wine and sherry casks
The finishing process is where Suntory’s influence is most evident, adding complexity beyond standard bourbon maturation.

Legent typically shows:
- Sweet caramel and vanilla
- Dark fruit from wine and sherry casks
- Soft spice
