A brief History

Littlemill, Lowlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1772.

Littlemill is one of those names that feels almost mythical now. Often cited as Scotland’s oldest licensed distillery, its documented history stretches back to 1772 in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire. That makes it a serious part of Lowland whisky heritage.

For much of its life, Littlemill operated quietly, producing lighter Lowland-style malt for blends and occasional single malt releases. It changed ownership multiple times and even experimented with different still setups and styles during the 20th century.

The distillery closed in 1994, and in 2004 a fire severely damaged the remaining buildings. Today, the original site is gone. What survives are rare casks and increasingly scarce official releases, often bottled at high age statements.

If you open a bottle of Littlemill today, you’re not just tasting whisky — you’re tasting a closed chapter of Scotch history.

Taste Profile

Fruity

Sweet Oaky / Woody

Littlemill’s style leaned toward light, fresh Lowland character in its younger years — orchard fruit, honeyed sweetness, and soft malt.

With extended ageing, especially in well-managed casks, the spirit developed richer texture and deeper oak influence. Older releases often show polished wood, tropical fruit notes, and layered sweetness.

There was never peat at the core of Littlemill’s style. It was about clarity and fruit rather than smoke or heavy spice.

  • Acquired by Gibson International in the 1980s

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Littlemill Distillery was located in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, in the Scottish Lowlands. It claimed a founding date of 1772, making it one of Scotland’s oldest licensed distilleries, though formal licensing records are debated.

Littlemill operated for over two centuries before closing in 1994. The site was later damaged by fire and eventually demolished. Remaining stocks were preserved and later released under private ownership.

Today, Littlemill is officially a silent (closed) distillery.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt Scotch whisky

  • Stills: Traditional copper pot stills

  • Experimental Production: At times produced peated and triple-distilled variants

  • Cask Policy: Primarily ex-bourbon, with some sherry maturation

  • Regional Classification: Lowlands

Littlemill was known for periodically experimenting with production style, including producing lightly peated spirit — uncommon for the Lowlands.

Whisky Style

Littlemill’s profile is typically:

  • Light and floral

  • Citrus-forward (lemon, grapefruit)

  • Fresh grass and herbs

  • Soft vanilla sweetness

  • Elegant, dry finish

Older releases often show refined oak integration while retaining a bright fruit core.

Key Expressions

  • Littlemill 12 Year Old (historic bottlings)

  • Littlemill 25 Year Old / 27 Year Old

  • Private Cellar Editions – Ultra-aged limited releases

  • Independent bottlings from the 1980s and early 1990s

Modern releases are drawn from remaining cask stocks and are positioned in the premium and ultra-premium category.

Significance

Littlemill is significant as one of Scotland’s oldest distilling sites and as part of the Lowland whisky heritage.

As a closed distillery, its remaining stock is finite. This scarcity has elevated its status among collectors, particularly well-aged releases from the 1980s. It represents a lost Lowland style that cannot be reproduced.
