A brief History

Loch Lomond, Highlands Region, Scotland. Founded in 1964.

Loch Lomond is one of the most technically unusual distilleries in Scotland. Sitting in Alexandria at the southern end of the Highlands, it doesn’t follow the usual blueprint. Most distilleries make one core style. Loch Lomond makes several — and it does it all under one roof.

Founded in 1964, the distillery is known for its unique straight-neck pot stills, which allow greater control over reflux and spirit character. It also produces both malt and grain whisky on site. That flexibility means Loch Lomond can create multiple flavour profiles without relying on external suppliers.

For years, it flew under the radar. Now it’s pushing forward with a clearer identity — quality-focused single malts that show range rather than one narrow style.

If you like distilleries that experiment quietly and control every step of production, Loch Lomond is worth paying attention to.

Taste Profile

Fruity

Sweet Oaky / Woody

Loch Lomond’s house style is fruit-led and slightly creamy. Orchard fruit — especially apple and pear — appears frequently, supported by honeyed sweetness and soft vanilla from oak maturation.

Some expressions show light smoke, but peat is not dominant in the core range. The texture is often smooth and rounded, with a dry oak finish that adds structure.

Because of the distillery’s technical flexibility, flavour can vary more than at many traditional sites — but balance is usually the goal.

Distillery Facts

Overview & History

Loch Lomond Distillery is located in Alexandria, near the southern edge of the Highlands, and was founded in 1964. Although relatively modern compared to many Scotch distilleries, it has built a reputation for technical flexibility and in-house production control.

The distillery is owned by Loch Lomond Group and operates as one of the most mechanically versatile sites in Scotland. Unlike most distilleries that produce a single style of spirit, Loch Lomond can create multiple distinct spirit types under one roof.

Production

  • Spirit Type: Single malt, single grain, and blended Scotch components

  • Stills: Traditional swan-neck pot stills and unique straight-neck “Lomond” stills with rectifying plates

  • Grain Production: Coffey-style column stills on site

  • Peat Policy: Both peated and unpeated production runs

  • Cask Policy: Ex-bourbon, sherry, and a wide range of wine finishes

The straight-neck still design allows the distillery to adjust reflux levels, effectively producing different flavour profiles without changing still shape.

Few Scotch distilleries produce both malt and grain whisky on the same site.

Whisky Style

Loch Lomond’s house style varies depending on expression, but generally includes:

  • Medium-bodied malt

  • Orchard fruit (green apple, pear)

  • Vanilla sweetness

  • Structured oak spice

  • Optional peat smoke in selected releases

Peated expressions tend to be earthy and robust rather than medicinal.

Key Expressions

  • Loch Lomond 12 Year Old – Balanced, bourbon-led maturation

  • Loch Lomond 18 Year Old – Deeper oak and dried fruit character

  • Inchmurrin – Fruity, unpeated variant

  • Inchmoan – Peated variant

  • Limited cask strength and wine-finished editions

The Inchmurrin and Inchmoan names reflect different spirit styles produced at the same distillery.

Significance

Loch Lomond is one of Scotland’s most technically adaptable distilleries. Its ability to produce multiple malt styles and grain whisky internally gives it blending autonomy similar to large Japanese producers.

It occupies a hybrid position: not historically prestigious like 19th-century Speyside names, but structurally important in modern Scotch production due to its flexibility and scale.
