A brief History
Mackmyra, Sweden. Founded in 1999.
Mackmyra is widely considered the pioneer of modern Swedish whisky. When it began in 1999, Sweden wasn’t known for producing whisky at all. A group of friends — all whisky enthusiasts — decided to change that. Their idea was simple: create whisky that reflected Sweden’s ingredients, climate, and character rather than copying Scotland.
The distillery first operated in a smaller facility before opening the striking Mackmyra Gravity Distillery in 2011. The tall tower design allows production to move downward through the building using gravity, reducing the need for heavy pumping and giving the site a unique look among world distilleries.
Mackmyra has built its reputation on creativity. Swedish oak casks, local barley, and unusual maturation locations — including underground mines — have all played a role in shaping the whisky’s identity. The result is a style that feels modern, slightly experimental, but still grounded in traditional single malt production.

Overview & History
Mackmyra Distillery was founded in 1999 and is widely regarded as the pioneer of modern Swedish whisky. The project began when a group of friends studying at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm decided to create a distinctly Swedish single malt.
The first distillery opened in Mackmyra village near Gävle. In 2011, the company launched a highly innovative second facility known as the Mackmyra Gravity Distillery, one of the most technologically advanced whisky distilleries in the world.
The gravity-based design allows the entire production process to move vertically through the building, reducing energy usage and improving efficiency.
